What began as a personal interest has evolved into a lifelong mission to seamlessly integrate traditional wisdom with scientific innovation, driving sustainable progress in animal healthcare.

After completing my Master’s in Veterinary Sciences (1998–2005), I was determined to contribute to the emerging field of phytogenics, despite the limited academic exposure to herbal applications within the veterinary curriculum at the time. This passion led me to the herbal veterinary pharmaceutical industry, where I began my career as a Research Associate in Research and Development, laying the foundation for my lifelong commitment to natural animal health solutions. The early phase of my career was an intensive learning experience, providing me with the opportunity to explore the untapped potential of phytogenic solutions. Over the past 18 years, I have had the privilege of collaborating with more than 50 esteemed universities and research centers globally. Through these partnerships, I have successfully led and co-investigated over 200 domestic and international clinical trials, generating robust, evidence-based insights into the role of phytogenics in sustainable livestock production.

Today, in my role as General Manager-Technical, I am dedicated to translating cutting-edge research into practical, field-ready solutions for poultry producers worldwide. My focus is firmly on bridging innovation with real-world challenges, championing a future where sustainability, animal welfare and productivity advance hand-in-hand.
This journey, marked by continuous learning, research and global collaborations, has not only shaped my professional path but also reaffirmed my commitment to advancing phytogenics for a more resilient poultry industry.

Poultry Creations: With over 17 years in research and development, what are the most significant advancements you have witnessed in poultry nutrition and health?

Dr. Shivi : Over the past two decades, poultry nutrition and health have evolved remarkably, driven by the twin goals of productivity enhancement and sustainability. Beyond the advancements in precision nutrition, one of the most significant shifts has been the focus on optimizing feed efficiency, improving key production indices and achieving better disease control.

A notable advancement has been the growing acceptance and integration of natural solutions that enhance gut health, support immunity and contribute to overall bird resilience. Phytogenics are no longer niche alternatives; they are becoming integral to achieving sustainable production models and ensuring feed-to-food safety.

Species-specific nutritional strategies have also gained momentum, allowing producers to fine-tune feed formulations for better growth performance while minimizing environmental impact. Drawing on my experience leading and coordinating research across over 50 global trial centers — including esteemed institutions in India, the USA, and Europe — these innovations have significantly enhanced key performance indicators such as health index, feed efficiency, immunity, gut integrity and livability, while also reducing reliance on chemicals, synthetic additives and antimicrobial growth promoters. Such advancements are reshaping modern poultry production, making it more efficient, welfare-oriented, and environmentally responsible — key pillars for the industry’s future success.

Poultry Creations: You have collaborated with multiple international universities and conducted numerous clinical trials. How have these collaborations contributed to innovation in the poultry sector?

Dr. Shivi : Collaboration has been a cornerstone of my professional journey and a vital catalyst for driving innovation in the poultry sector. Working alongside esteemed institutions such as Washington State University, the University of Georgia, Aristotle University, IRTA Spain and many others, has provided an opportunity to approach poultry health challenges from a broader, more holistic perspective.

By leading and co-investigating over 200 domestic and international clinical trials, we have generated a wealth of practical and scientific data. These trials have been instrumental in customizing phytogenic solutions that address region-specific challenges, enhancing both productivity and animal welfare.

Such collaborations have allowed us to validate new concepts in real-world production environments, accelerating the transition of innovations from research laboratories to poultry farms. They have also fostered cross-learning, combining academic rigor with field practicality—an essential blend for developing effective, scalable solutions that meet the evolving needs of the global poultry industry.

Poultry Creations: Phytogenics and herbal formulations are gaining traction in animal nutrition. What role do you see them playing in the future of sustainable poultry farming?

Dr. Shivi : Phytogenics are set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable poultry farming. As the industry continues to shift toward sustainable production models, phytogenic solutions offer a natural and science-backed approach to maintaining bird health, laying strong immuno-foundation, enhancing gut functionality and optimizing feed utilization.

Throughout my professional journey, I have witnessed how phytogenic interventions contribute not just to improved performance metrics, but also to stronger immunity, better resilience and overall flock well-being.

Looking ahead, phytogenics have become essential tools in improving production efficiency, lowering the environmental footprint of poultry farming and meeting the rising consumer demand for safe, ethical and antibiotic-free poultry products. Their versatility in addressing health challenges naturally positions them essential pillar of responsible poultry farming.

Poultry Creations: Having authored and co-authored 350+ research publications, what key areas of poultry science do you believe need more research attention?

Dr. Shivi : While the poultry industry has made remarkable strides, several critical areas still demand focused research to drive future progress. One key focus is the modulation of the gut microbiome, which plays a pivotal role not only in optimizing digestion but also in enhancing overall bird health and immunity. Strengthening the immunological foundation early in life is another crucial area, as it can significantly reduce disease susceptibility and dependence on therapeutic interventions. Additionally, there is an urgent need to develop standardized health indices for proactive, data-driven flock management, as well as integrated preventive strategies — including phytogenics and nutraceuticals — to address emerging and re-emerging disease threats. Despite improvements in productivity, the consistent optimization of feed conversion, growth, and overall production efficiency across varied environmental conditions remains a major opportunity for the industry. Moving forward, innovations must focus on tailored, sustainable solutions that balance high performance with animal welfare and environmental stewardship, ensuring the long-term viability of the industry.

Poultry Creations: How do you maintain a balance between your professional responsibilities and personal life to ensure both productivity and well-being?

Dr. Shivi : Balancing professional demands with personal well-being is essential for sustained performance. At work, effective time management, prioritization, and delegation allow me to concentrate on strategic initiatives. Outside of work, I recharge by spending quality time with family and friends. This balance boosts my productivity and helps me stay focused in a demanding industry.
