In an exclusive e-interview by Mr. Ravinder Kumar, Managing Editor of Poultry Creations, with Mr. Ricky Thaper, Treasurer of the Poultry Federation of India, discuss on the current state and future prospects of the poultry industry in India, along with insights into the country’s agricultural challenges and strategies for self-sufficiency.

Poultry Creations: What is the current level of poultry meat production and consumption in India? What projection do you have for the coming years?

Ricky Thaper: Poultry production in India has undergone significant growth in the last four decades, transitioning from conventional farming practices to commercial production systems with state-of-the-art technological interventions.

Currently, the total poultry population in India is 851.81 million (as per the 20th Livestock Census), with egg production reaching around 129.60 billion during 2021-22. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT) production data for 2021, India globally ranks second in egg production and fifth in meat production. Egg production in the country has increased from 78.48 billion in 2014-15 to 138.38 billion in 2022-23, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.35% over the past 9 years. India’s meat production has risen from 6.69 million tonnes (MTs) in 2014-15 (April-March) to 9.77 MT in 2022-23. The annual poultry meat production is estimated at 4.99 MT. The increase in average income and urban population has led to a tremendous increase in poultry demand and steady consumption growth over the years. Poultry meat production was only one million tonnes (MT) during 2001-2002-3. While the poultry sector is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country, it is dominated by the wet market. According to a report by the Confederation of Indian Industry, the shift in demand from live birds to fresh chilled and frozen poultry products has been rather slow, and processing levels are also at a lower level of 6% of the total production. The aim is to increase processing to 20-30% of the output in the next decade. There is huge potential for India to increase poultry production through rapid improvements in genetic animal health and feeding practices.

Poultry Creations: How much of the supply of cereals and oilseeds is sourced from grains produced in India? Additionally, what proportion of imported grains does the poultry sector require?
Ricky Thaper: India has been self-sufficient in cereals such as rice and wheat, and the country has been the biggest global exporter of rice for the last several decades. In terms of oilseeds, India imports about 58% of its annual requirement of edible oils, mostly palm, soybean and sunflower oils. India’s domestic production of soybean ranks as the second-largest producer of oil after mustard seed. The demand for soymeal is largely met through domestic production. However, in 2021-22, India allowed 1.2 million tonnes of genetically modified (GM) soymeal to help the poultry industry after animal feed prices tripled in a year to a record high. In addition to soymeal, the poultry sector also uses maize as a key ingredient of poultry feed. However, with the government aiming to produce ethanol from maize instead of sugarcane, there may be a shortfall in domestic supplies, which would meet the demand of both poultry and the biofuel sector. India needs to allow imports of GM maize and focus on increasing domestic production as demand from poultry, the starch industry and the biofuel sectors are rising steadily.

Poultry Creations: India is making great efforts to become a self-sufficient nation in agriculture, except in the case of vegetable oils. Can it achieve this challenge, or will it, like China, eventually become a constant importer of certain products, as happened years ago with soybean meal?
Ricky Thaper: India is heavily dependent on imports for edible oil, as currently about 58% of the total cooking oil demand is met through imports. Edible oils (crude oils) such as palm, soybean and sunflower are imported from countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina and Ukraine. Although domestic production of oilseeds such as soybean, groundnut and mustard has been increasing, demand exceeds output. A palm oil mission is underway, but the country will likely continue importing edible oils for the next decade or so. India also imports pulses, including tur (pigeon pea), urad and masoor (lentils), primarily from countries like Myanmar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Canada and Australia. India aims to source urad and tur from Brazil and Argentina and there have been several discussions with South American countries regarding pulse imports. Presently, India’s annual consumption of pulses is around 28 million tonnes, while the country imported 3 MT of pulses in the 2023 calendar year. In the next decade, India is expected to continue its import dependence for cooking oils and pulses.

Poultry Creations: As a pioneering figure in the poultry industry, what sparked your interest in animal health and nutrition during the early stages of your career?

Dr. Shaveta: In the early stages of my career, I found myself drawn to the world of animal health and nutrition through a combination of personal experiences and a deep-seated passion for Animals.

My initial exposure to veterinary sciences during my bachelor’s degree ignited a curiosity about the intricate relationship between what animals consume and their overall health. However, during my internship focussed on poultry farming that I truly recognized the pivotal role nutrition plays in the poultry industry and that realization struck me when I observed the direct impact of well-formulated diets on the growth, vitality, and disease resistance of the poultry flock. Witnessing the transformation of healthy, thriving birds fuelled my enthusiasm for exploring the science behind animal nutrition further. This prompted my decision to pursue a master’s in animal nutrition, where I delved into the complexities of feed formulation and the potential of feed additives to enhance performance.

As I navigated through my studies, I became acutely aware of the economic challenges faced by poultry farmers, particularly the significant portion of production costs attributed to feed. This realization became a driving force behind my desire to contribute to the industry’s growth and sustainability by optimizing feed efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

My mantra: –
Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Trust your abilities. Celebrate your achievements, learn from setbacks, and uplift those around you. Believe in prayers. Ask for help or advice from your seniors/mentors around you.

Poultry Creations: Can you highlight a specific moment or project in your career where you felt you were pioneering new approaches or breaking barriers in the Animal Healthcare industry?

Dr. Shaveta: Yes, there are many moments throughout the career which were exhilarating. One of the moments want to share that during my days of working with Vetina, as a Marketing Head, I was one the member who conceptualised and implemented the idea for the launch the concept of Pet Insurance. So, there were significant amount of strategic planning, research, and execution. It needs deep understanding of both the market and the evolving needs of pet owners. Being a Vet and a pet parent, I understand, an emotional connect and on the other side about pet diseases, diagnostic services, and age-related considerations which is required for the thoroughness of the approach. Launching the concept has long-term impact is a significant marker of success in Vetina and an evolution in Pet’s health.

Poultry Creations: What are some of the most significant challenges you’ve observed in the poultry industry throughout your career, especially concerning the role of women in leadership?

Dr. Shaveta: At the time I joined this industry there were very less females including Vets and Non-Vets who were working in Private sector in Poultry field. If there are females, they were more positioned in laboratories, R&D houses. In last 8-10 years things have changed a lot and many females are taking challenging jobs of working in fields like Sales and Marketing, Product Development, Business Development. They are working out their niche area. The challenges which I have seen and feel that women’s is work life balance. Being a professional with family obligations is a significant challenge for women in leadership roles. The demanding nature of Poultry Industry, long work hours and irregular work schedule can exacerbate difficulties in achieving work life balance.

Mentorship plays a pivotal role in shaping future in professional development but also help in navigate challenges in work environment. Sometimes, women are under presented in leadership positions. Limited access to resources, sometimes gender biasness. I suggest that females should always sought help from their Seniors in the Industry. I feel blessed that I have always received a lot of support and guidance from senior veterinarians/key stake holders which helps in shaping my career in this Poultry, Dairy and Companion Industry.

Poultry Creations: Given your expertise in animal nutrition, could you discuss any notable innovations or advancements you’ve witnessed that have positively impacted the poultry sector?

Dr. Shaveta: Yes, there are many notable innovations that have led to advancements in this Poultry industry. Advances in Precise nutrition have allowed more tailored and efficient feeding programs in Poultry. Precise Nutrition helps optimize growth, performance, and overall health status of animals. The development of functional feed additives like prebiotics, probiotic, enzymes and phytogenic that enhance nutrient utilization, improve gut health and improve immunity which contributes to overall performance and disease resistance. To control disease challenges use of anticoccidials in therapeutic doses have given an edge for improved gut health and performance. Right rotation and shuttle programs with the usage of high-quality sourcing of Anticoccidials make a difference in the health of birds. With the ever-growing demand of sustainable and environmentally friendly practices there is always need of alternative feed ingredients. Proactive approaches in gut health and enhancing immune systems have become essential components of Poultry Nutrition.

Although I feel, In India, there is much work needed in Nutrigenomics where studies regarding the interaction of Nutrition and Genome have led to deeper understanding how the nutrients influence gene expression in Poultry. The integration of digital technologies such as precision farming tools and sensors for real time monitoring of feed consumption, growth rates and health parameters.

Continuous learning about the industry trends, technological advancements, and marketing strategies. Establish key performance indicators for each area of responsibility. Monitor regularly and analyse performance metrics in your work to track progress, identify areas of improvements and make data driven decisions wherever required.

In all my work experience, I have given edge to learn and adapt in response to changing market conditions, technological shifts and market dynamics. Embracing a mindset that welcomes change and view challenges as opportunities of growth. I must add the most important thing which we overlook during our growth and career is self-care. Balancing multiple responsibilities can be demanding so ensure that you prioritize self-care to avoid burn out and long-term effectiveness.

Poultry Creations: With challenges like high production costs and lower selling prices in the poultry industry, what ideas do you have to make things better and more profitable?

Dr. Shaveta: Yes, it’s a big challenge in current situation. Efficient feed mill management where we can work out accurate feed formulations. Embrace technology advancements such as automated feeding systems, data analytics to monitor and manage poultry production efficiently. To use sensors and IoT devices. Implement robust biosecurity systems. We should invest in energy efficient equipment and practices to reduce utility costs. Vertical integration like owing or partnering with feed mills, hatcheries, and processing plants. “It is very important to maintain core competence and never forget the origins – always focus on one vision and build around that instead of attempting to dabble in several different avenues.”

Aniket Parikh

In our February 2024 issue, we are excited to present an insightful conversation with Mr. Aniket Parikh, a visionary leader and the driving force behind Stallen South Asia Private Limited.

With a distinguished academic background in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University, USA, Mr. Parikh’s journey reflects a dynamic blend of strategic consulting for Fortune 500 companies in the United States and a dedicated commitment to the family business. Under his stewardship, Stallen has emerged as a global player in the veterinary industry, showcasing a diverse portfolio and a significant international footprint. Let’s delve into the insights and experiences that have shaped Mr. Aniket Parikh’s impactful role in the industry.

Poultry Creations: Could you briefly introduce yourself to our readers, sharing your professional background and key experiences that have led to your current role?

Aniket: I worked for Accenture Strategy, out of their Washington DC office as a management consultant to their Fortune 500 clients across the country. After a 2 year stint, with roles spanning several industries I returned to the family business fray, initially looking after the international markets and business development for Stallen. In 2017 I took over in the capacity of CEO at Stallen, looking after the entire domestic business as well as the international factories and sales. My global experience with different cultures, ability to speak several international languages coupled with my Indian work experience allowed me to shape Stallen into a true Indian multi-national providing the global quality and commitment in terms of product quality as well as service and brand ethos across our different organizational groups.

Poultry Creations: How did your academic background in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology influence your approach to innovation in the poultry industry, and what drove your decision to transition from a Fortune 500 strategy consulting role in the US to join your family business, Stallen, in India?

Aniket: I wanted to be a part of the India growth story, which I believe has now truly picked up pace and I am glad I get to be right in the midst of it.
My technical education allows me to better understand the product and the manufacturing behind it – we have 4 manufacturing facilities, and it is this background that helps me better understand the flow rate between reactors, or capacities of our closed transfer systems. At a time during which our industry is seeing a lot of mergers and acquisitions, I am trying to emulate the organization and growth structures of those Fortune 500 companies to ensure Stallen can outpace the competition and is prepared for the future and continuity.

Poultry Creations: How do owning manufacturing facilities in Canada and the USA contribute to Stallen’s international footprint and expansion strategy, and how does the company effectively manage the challenges associated with regulatory frameworks and market dynamics across its diverse range of global operations?

Aniket: Having facilities abroad for one helps us access local talent and regional customers – but in addition during difficult times like COVID or the Suez Canal crisis, help us in still offering competitive products by minimizing the freight costs and shipping times. Having cross border facilities fosters innovation and the sharing of R&D helps us in introducing newer products and standardizing our products across the board. Today, we may be one of the only pure-play veterinary firms out of India with such a model globally and exports in all 6 in habited continents of the world. With approvals from the USDA, CFIA, Health Canada, APVMA, Russia, China and more, we offer a product and technical file that is thorough and internationally approved. We believe that our customers, be it in India or in the USA – should have access to the same product with the same quality.

Poultry Creations: Could you share insights into the key features and significance of the new therapeutics manufacturing facility that aligns with US FDA standards? How does this facility contribute to Stallen’s vision of being a global leader in veterinary pharma?

Aniket: Stallen is known to be strong in its offerings of feed additives, vaccines and certain bio-security products; however we have not been able to make an impact as strong as we would like in the therapeutic segment. It is part of our 2030 goal to ensure that a Stallen therapeutic product is available at every veterinary retailer in the country. We have the salesforce, the manufacturing capabilities, but we were lacking in this particular segment – we hope to launch a slew of new products over the next couple of years from generics to novel combinations to help fulfill this gap. With that Stallen can offer more to it’s current customers and also help tap into some of the smaller and household farms.

Poultry Creations: How does Stallen plan to position itself as the primary supplier of generic and branded veterinary drugs from India to the global market, aligning with Prime Ministers directive of India ‘Pharmacy to the World’?

Aniket: India is popularly known and accepted globally as a renowned supplier of medial drugs and formulations – generics and novel alike. However this repertoire has never carry forwarded to the veterinary side – there is no large veterinary drug manufacturer with extent of operations like the human counterparts. This opens up a large opportunity for our company and facility to obtain international approvals like the US FDA to then supply our products in developed markets through our brand name as well as in a CDMO capacity.

Poultry Creations: As a second-generation leader, how do you envision Stallen empowering the next generation of poultry entrepreneurs, both within your family and in the broader industry?

Aniket: It is an exciting time to be a part of Stallen and lead its change through the industry – we have observed that a majority of our customers and stakeholders are also going through a similar transition to the the second generation.
This change benefits all in terms of changed buying patterns, increased interest in quality, change from relationship-based procurement to quality-based procurement, to more professional management, cleaner business practices and a shared vision to move forward and offer a cleaner, greener and healthier end product to our general population.

Poultry Creations: In light of Stallen’s growth, how does the company integrate sustainability practices into its operations, especially concerning poultry healthcare?

Aniket: Stallen has always been to know to innovate and be ahead of its peers in the veterinary industry – taking a page out of the auto-makers hand book, Stallen moved its entire operations on to SAP S4 HANA – a move that helped standardize our quality benchmarks and procurement patterns. All our facilities are ISO 140001 (environmental standards) approved and we are constantly investing in our waste management programs to minimize our contributions. We are moving a variety of our promotional and marketing materials to a digital format to help minimize the carbon footprint and optimize product packaging to reduce the amount of paper consumed.

Poultry Creations: How has Mr. Amit Parikh, your father and founder of Stallen South Asia Private Limited, influenced and supported your entry into the veterinary industry?

Aniket: 2024 will close out an entire 360 in terms of our company’s growth cycle. My father, Mr Amit Parikh, entered the veterinary industry as a contract manufacturer to Novartis (now Elanco), for their poultry products in India. As a family, we used to focus purely on contract manufacturing for large pharmaceutical companies, and the veterinary business was an offshoot of the same. Today this offshoot has carved its on niche employing more than 400 people as a group with presence across the globe. We aim to use the standards and vision that he laid out in in 1990 while entering the industry to further enlarge our position within this space.

Poultry Creations: What do you see as the most significant challenges and opportunities in the veterinary pharmaceutical industry, and how does Stallen plan to navigate and capitalize on them?

Aniket: The current barrier to entry in India for new manufactures, especially in the feed additive segment is extremely low, or almost non-existent – this opens up an opportunity for a lot of unorganized players and adulterated products in the marketplace. These low cost products pose a temporary risk, disrupting the pricing models of more established and quality based firms. Standardization and government regulation will help ‘clean-up’ the number of companies and put Indian manufactured products in line with their international counter parts. Fortunately Stallen is already heavily invested in this cap-ex and is future proofed and ready for any such regulations – this will allow us to outpace our competitors and give the customers the products they deserve.

Poultry Creations: Based on your journey with Stallen, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the veterinary pharmaceutical or related industries, especially those from the next generation of family businesses?

Aniket: It is very important to maintain core competence and never forget the origins – always focus on one vision and build around that instead of attempting to dabble in several different avenues. Building on core competence helps the internal structure and invariably affects the positioning of the company – like the old saying – better to be a master of one then a jack of all.

Poultry Creations: What strategies do you consider essential for achieving sustainable growth and success in navigating the evolving trends and challenges within the poultry industry in India?

Aniket: The Indian business landscape is one for business schools – with various language and cultural barriers – it is very important to not have a standard template to your approach but instead customize and adapt to the situation. Hence our handling of customers, timely deliveries, pricing structures and marketing efforts all are constantly adapted region to region to ensure we are being all inclusive. At the end of the day, the most important formula for India is competitive price + quality product = long term loyalty.

Poultry Creations: What specific improvements or additions would you suggest to make Poultry Creations Magazine more valuable and relevant to its readers in the poultry industry?

Aniket: I think the magazine’s dynamic approach is going to position It well amongst the historical publications which somewhere have been diluted with way too many advertisements. The magazine should encourage and foster.

Ricky Thaper, Treasurer, Poultry Federation of India

The sector through applications of technologies and collaboration with various stakeholders in the value chain is gearing up to meet rising demand for healthy poultry products through taking a series of measures -Ricky Thaper

In the last four decades or so the poultry sector has grown fastest in the livestock sector transferring itself into supplier of most economic sources for protein for consumers through development of value chains.

The sector through applications of technologies and collaboration with various stakeholders in the value chain is gearing up to meet rising demand for healthy poultry products through taking a series of measures.

The growth in India poultry industry is being driven by the rising disposable incomes and change in food habits. The shift from the traditional diet, which relied heavily on pulses, to food products such as meat, eggs, and dairy products to meet the protein requirements is significantly aiding the industry growth. The increasing awareness about health and wellness is further driving the demand for a protein-rich diet.

According to the Economic Survey (2022-23), the livestock sector comprising dairy, poultry meat, eggs and fisheries witnessed a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.9 per cent during 2014-15 to 2020-21 (at constant prices), and its contribution to total agriculture GVA (at constant prices) has increased from 24.3% in 2014-15 to 30.1% in 2020-21.

According to the department of animal husbandry and dairying annual report (2022-23), poultry production in India has taken a quantum leap in the last four decades, emerging from conventional farming practices to commercial production systems with state-of-the-art technological interventions. Broiler meat production in the country is estimated at around 5 million tonne (MT) annually.

According to EMR market research, India poultry market currently valued at USD 28.18 billion, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.1% in the forecast period of 2024-2032 to reach a value of approximately USD 44.97 billion by 2032.

During the 2022-23, India exported poultry and poultry products to 64 countries, generating revenue of USD 134 million.

The adoption of modern technology was a game-changer for the industry. Improved feed formulations, automated systems for feeding and temperature control, and state-of-the-art disease management practices revolutionized poultry farming. These innovations enhanced production efficiency, leading to increased output. Since the 1990s as India underwent economic liberalization and urbanization, there was a noticeable shift in dietary patterns. Urban consumers sought convenient and readily available sources of protein. Poultry products, particularly chicken meat and eggs, emerged as affordable and accessible options as protein rich food.

India’s rapidly growing population is a direct driver of demand for poultry products. With more mouths to feed, there is a continuous need for affordable and nutritious sources of protein. As incomes rise and lifestyles evolve, dietary habits shift towards increased protein consumption. Chicken meat and eggs are perceived as healthier alternatives to red meat, driving up demand. Poultry products are often more affordable than other protein sources, making them accessible to a broader segment of the population. Poultry production can be influenced by seasonal factors, including extreme weather conditions. These fluctuations can lead to periods of oversupply and shortages.

Fluctuations in feed prices directly affect production costs and, consequently, supply. Advances in poultry farming techniques and technology have improved production efficiency. Farms that adopt these practices can produce more, potentially leading to oversupply. Consumer awareness regarding health and safety issues can influence demand. Food safety incidents or concerns about antibiotic use in poultry production can affect consumer choices.

The Indian poultry industry is focussing on a multifaceted approach in adopting technologies, minimising production risk and improving supply change management to sustain the growth of the sector.

Use of Technologies & Analytics in Market Research & Consumer Behaviour

On forecasting of demand and supply situation, advanced data analytics tools and software are currently available to poultry producers, enabling them to analyse historical data, market trends, and consumer behaviour. These tools support poultry farmers to make informed decisions regarding production volumes and timing. India’s diverse climate can impact poultry production, leading to seasonal variations in demand and supply.

Poultry farmers or producers employ seasonal adjustments in terms of breeding and hatching schedules to match the market’s demand. For instance, in regions experiencing extreme temperatures, production may be scaled down during the summer months to avoid stress on the birds. Automated feeding systems, temperature control systems, and data-driven management tools optimize resource utilization and reduce production costs. This efficiency helps producers maintain competitive pricing and a steady supply.

Diversification into Value Added Products
Beyond poultry products like chicken meat and eggs, diversification has to become a key strategy for expansion of the poultry sector. Currently producers are focussing on the development of value-added products, such as processed poultry items including sausages, nuggets, and ready-to-cook meals. These products cater to the evolving tastes and preferences of consumers, offering convenience and variety especially for younger consumers. Poultry farms are increasingly expanding to different regions to mitigate risks associated with localized supply disruptions. By establishing operations in multiple locations, producers could reduce their vulnerability to disease outbreaks, adverse weather conditions, or logistical challenges.

Optimization of Supply Chain & Marketing
Producers and processors are streamlining supply chain operations to minimize waste and ensure timely distribution. Advanced logistics and transportation management systems facilitate the efficient movement of poultry products from farms to consumers. This optimization reduces the chances of product shortages due to logistical issues. Well thought out marketing campaigns in the similar line of National Egg Coordination Committee’s ‘Sunday Ho Ya Monday Roj Khao Ande’ (Sunday or Monday, have eggs daily) are essential for increasing consumer awareness and demand. Poultry Companies have started to invest in advertising, branding, and promotions to highlight the nutritional benefits of poultry products. These efforts create consumer loyalty and boost demand. Indian poultry producers are exploring export opportunities. By tapping into foreign markets, they diversify their revenue streams and reduce reliance on the domestic market. This strategy helps manage supply levels more effectively.

Collaboration with Government on Regulations
Working closely with the government agencies both at the centre and state levels have become crucial for the poultry industry’s growth. Poultry sector works closely with regulatory bodies to develop policies for ensuring food safety and quality standards. Government also provides support such as financial incentives, subsidies, and infrastructure development. The government’s role has been critical in initiating effective measures in dealing with disease outbreak and emergency response. Timely and coordinated efforts during disease outbreaks help minimize disruptions in the supply chain.

Collaboration with Various Associations in the Value Chains
A number of industry associations, both at the national and regional levels, play important roles in supporting poultry farmers. These associations advocate for policies that promote sustainability, ensure the availability of quality inputs, and provide a platform for knowledge exchange and problem-solving. Bodies such as the Poultry Federation of India (PFI), The Compound Livestock Feed Manufacturers Association (CLFMA), Vets in Poultry (VIP), Indian Federation of Animal Health Companies (INFAH) and several state-level organizations, are the key support for the industry, fostering growth and resilience among poultry farmers.

In addition, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) recently has approved India’s self-declaration stating that it is free from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, in specific poultry compartments. The approval to this self-declaration is expected to open up new opportunities for Indian poultry in the global market, contributing to the country’s economic growth. According to the ministry animal husbandry statement, India gave a self-declaration that it was free of HPAI in 26 poultry compartments, which was approved by WOAH on October 13, coinciding with the World Egg day. These poultry compartments are located in four states — Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

With such collaborations with various players in the poultry value chains, the sector is poised to meet rising challenges and provide consumer demand for healthy chicken meat products in the coming decades.

Shri Parshottam Rupala Ji, Hon’ble Union Cabinet Minister, Department of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries & Dairying, Government of India addressed the Indian Poultry Industry during World Egg Day 2023.

In a significant milestone for India’s poultry industry, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has granted its approval to India’s self-declaration of freedom from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in specific poultry compartments. This remarkable achievement reflects India’s unwavering commitment to upholding stringent standards of animal health and biosecurity.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as Bird Flu, was first detected in India in the state of Maharashtra in February 2006. Subsequently, the country has witnessed annual outbreaks of HPAI in various regions, leading to substantial economic losses. The disease has been reported in 24 states and union territories, resulting in the culling of over 9 million birds as part of efforts to control its spread.

In light of this achievement, Shri Parshottam Rupala Ji, Hon’ble Union Cabinet Minister, Department of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries & Dairying, Government of India addressed the Indian Poultry Industry during World Egg Day 2023. He added that India is not only the third-largest producer of eggs, surpassing the remarkable number of 129.60 billion annually but also the fifth-largest producer of poultry, reaching an impressive figure of 4.47 million tonnes annually. This recognition of India’s bird flu-free zones has far-reaching implications for international trade and the poultry sector’s prosperity.

India’s approach to combating HPAI follows a “detect and cull” policy, as outlined in the National Action Plan for Prevention, Control, and Containment of Avian Influenza (revised – 2021). This comprehensive response involves the humane destruction of infected and exposed animals, eggs, feed, litter, and other contaminated materials. Additionally, measures such as restrictions on the movement of poultry and poultry products, disinfection and clean-up of infected premises, and the implementation of a Post-Operative Surveillance Plan (POSP) have been put in place. It is important to note that vaccination against HPAI is not permitted in India.
Compartmentalization: A Key Control Measure
Despite these challenges, India has proactively embraced the concept of poultry compartmentalization to mitigate the risks associated with HPAI. Compartmentalization is a vital tool that enhances animal health, reduces the risk of disease outbreaks within and outside the compartment, and facilitates the trade of poultry and poultry-related products.

Approval of Self-Declaration by WOAH
The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India, submitted a self-declaration asserting freedom from High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza in 26 poultry compartments to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). On October 13, 2023, WOAH officially approved this self-declaration, coinciding with World Egg Day. The declaration is now accessible to the public on the WOAH website.

These poultry compartments are located in four states of India, namely Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. WOAH’s recognition of this declaration underscores India’s dedication to international biosecurity standards and is poised to significantly enhance the export potential of Indian poultry and poultry products, including meat and eggs. India, being the third-largest global producer of eggs (129.60 billion) and the fifth-largest producer of poultry meat (4.47 million tonnes), is well-positioned to capitalize on this achievement.

During the 2022-23 fiscal year, India exported poultry and poultry products to 64 countries, generating revenue of 134 million USD. The approval of this self-declaration is anticipated to unlock new opportunities for the Indian poultry sector in the global market, making a substantial contribution to the country’s economic growth.
