Poultry Creations: With the rapid modernization of India’s poultry sector, how do you foresee domestic feed-grain demand evolving in direct competition with ethanol mandates?

Ricky Thaper: At present, the Indian poultry industry, which has seen 7% to 8% annual growth in the last decade is valued at over $ 30 billion. The industry has transformed itself from following conventional farming practices to a modern commercial production system. However sustained supply of feed ingredients remains a key challenge. Poultry feed mostly consist of Maize (corn) 50-55% and Soybean Meal 20-25% and rest other feed ingredients and feed additives & nutrients.

Stating that there has been increasing diversion of maize towards industrial use and ethanol production, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in the vision document for poultry sector in 2047 had also stated “the current growth level of maize and soybean production in the country will be insufficient to meet the demand of the poultry industry.” The CII has urged the government to allow imports of genetically modified (GM) maize and soybean because of ‘unprecedented increase’ in feed prices.

The demand supply situation has entered a new phase especially maize, a key ingredient, has become India’s single-largest feedstock for ethanol. With growing demand for maize following the government’s future plans to expand ethanol blending program, may result in lesser supplies for poultry, dairy and aqua feed.

Poultry Creations: What regulatory alignments are most critical right now to ensure stable, cost-effective grain supplies for the growing poultry and livestock industry?

Ricky Thaper: To meet the growing needs of the livestock feed, the government needs to have an open import policy for sourcing maize and soybean meal from the various countries, irrespective of whether the crops are GM variants or not. With the competing demand from ethanol, starch and other sectors, feed ingredients imports should be open without any restrictions. In August, 2021, the government had relaxed import rules to allow the first shipment of 1.2 million ton of genetically modified (GM) soybean meal to support the domestic poultry industry after a record spike in feed prices. Poultry industry has urged the Government repeatedly to allow both import and cultivation of GM maize and soybeans to fulfil the requirement of these two major feed ingredients in the coming years. The sustainable supplies of feed in coming years would be crucial for the growth of the poultry industry.
Currently annual animal feed production is estimated close to 56 million tons which includes dairy feed 16.5 million tons, aqua feed 2.5 million tons and poultry feed 37 million tons. The feed ingredients are mostly maize and soybean meal About 60-65% of the output of maize is used as poultry and livestock feed while rest is used for industrial use.

In the 2025-26 crop year (July-June), the agriculture ministry has estimated maize production at 52 million tons while output estimate by trade is around 48 million tons. As per industry estimate, poultry industry used around 26 million tons of maize in feed while around 5.5 million tons used for dairy feed while around 6 million tons was used by starch industry and only 1.5 MT is used for human consumption. 1 million tons in alcohol and about 1 million tons in seed and wastage. Balance 8-10 MT of maize was diverted for ethanol production.

Poultry Creations: How can corporate agribusiness interests and national trade policies better synchronize to protect poultry margins during periods of commodity price spikes?

Ricky Thaper: The poultry sector is a vital sector of the livestock industry which provides employment to over 6 million people. While industry is witnessing a steady pace, sustainable feed supplies at reasonable prices would be crucial for the growth of the sector as feed prices constitute over 65% to 70% of the cost of production. Any increase in feed prices hit the margins of poultry farmers. The government has been focussing on growth of agriculture and allied sectors. There are several industries which require maize at their key raw material so the government should focus on. The current growth level of maize production in the country will be insufficient to meet the demand of the poultry industry in coming years.
The soybean production cycle in India for the year 2025–26 has seen a notable downturn compared to the 2024–25 season. As per the data from the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA & FW) or the Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), the consensus is clear: production fell sharply due to a combination of lower acreage, extreme weather and falling yields.

Government Estimate is 12.60 Million Tons and the Industry Estimate (SOPA Ground Survey) | is11.03 Million Tons The Government numbers track total theoretical agricultural output, while SOPA’s numbers heavily filter for commercial availability, market arrivals and clean seed weight available to crushing mills.

Three main factors compressed the 2025–26 harvest compared to the previous year:
1. Reduced Cultivation Acreage – Farmers actively shifted some of their land away from soy due to weaker market-yard prices observed mid-2025, from 118.31 Lakh Hectares (2024–25 Acreage) to 112.14 Lakh Hectares (2025–26 Acreage), a decline of roughly 5.2%

2. Depressed Yields per Hectare – Climate abnormalities took a heavy toll on the plants during critical growth phases. The national average crop yield dropped from 1,089 kg per hectare in 2024–25 down to 983 kg per hectare in 2025–26.

3. Weather Anomalies and Crop Disease – Excessive & Uneven Rains: The monsoon brought flash water-logging in low-lying areas during the initial phase, causing localized washouts that required re-sowing. Later, prolonged heavy rains during the critical harvesting time damaged crop quality, yielding smaller grain sizes and higher moisture content. Pest Pressures: Key growing belts saw infestations of Yellow Mosaic Virus and aerial blight, which severely stunted pod development.

Because total commercial availability for crushing fell dramatically to10.40 Million Tons (compared to over 12.32 Million Tons in 2024–25), the domestic crushing industry has faced severe supply shortages. This raw material deficit is the primary driver behind the rocketing local meal prices and the collapse of the export trade.

Another major challenging area is the dried distillers’ grains with soluble (DDGS) from maize, a key by-product of ethanol production, are not of desired quality for feed and the toxins levels are high. The challenge is that this toxin affected DDGS when used in feed will set into food chain.

Poultry Creations: What sustainable growth models are proving successful in insulating the Indian poultry sector from global supply chain shocks?

Ricky Thaper: The poultry industry, like other agriculture sectors, is subject to the supply and demand scenario, market structures and Government policies. An open import policy on animal feed ingredient would go a long way meeting the demand of livestock and poultry feed. Several south Asian countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka have allowed imports of GM Maize and GM soybean / soymeal. The GM soybean / soybean meal and Maize imports should be allowed with a fixed quota during off or non-harvesting season here so that it does not adversely impact the farmers’ price realisation. Reduction in import duties on these feed ingredients in the poultry feed should be announced soon.

As the demand and supply gap between consumption and production of feed grows, liberalised imports of soybean meal and maize would mitigate the problems and keep the prices under check. With the competing sector demanding maize supplies, liberalising policy on import is of paramount importance for sustainable growth of the poultry sector which is growing at a steady pace with the rising demand of protein enriched food.

The soybean production of 2025–26 in India appears as per the Government estimate is 12.7 Million Tons, released on March 10, 2026 by PIB. This itself shows a declining crop production by 17% in comparison to the Government of India data/report for 2024–25, which was 15.1 Million Tons. Hence, the decline of soybean production has resulted in an acute shortage of soybean meal, which is a major protein input for animal feed- poultry, dairy, fisheries and aqua feed.

The current soya meal price seems to be a continuous trend of price surge, day on day and week on week. This is making dairy, poultry, aqua and fish farmers panic due to the rise in input cost. The feed industry itself is not in a position to absorb the cost and produce viably. The surge has also resulted in the higher prices of poultry produce like egg, chicken, all dairy produce by primarily milk paneer, curd etc, fish and shrimp. Previously, in a similar situation, in 2020–21 period when a shortage of feed ingredient soybean meal, caused by low production levels, plunged the entire industry into crisis, the government provided timely support to the sector by authorizing the import of 1.2 million metric tons of GM soymeal.

To overcome the crisis, the poultry, dairy and aqua industry associations have requested the concern Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Animal Husbandry for the below options:

1. Implementation of a Market Linked Mechanism for Import Policy in order to safeguard the interests of both soybean-producing farmers and Poultry, dairy and aqua farmers. Under this mechanism, whenever the market price of soybean exceeds 25% above MSP or rises beyond Rs.6,660 per quintal, permission for the import of GM soybean meal may automatically be granted. This would help protect the interests of both “producer farmers” and “consumer farmers.”

2. Implementation of stock limits: Also, ensure stock limits for all warehouses and stock locations in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. They should also report their stocks daily and weekly to the authorities, as was asked by the Hon’ble Ministry of Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. However, the stockist lobby in various States has deferred this, which is resulting in this price surge.

3. Import of GM Soybean Meal: Permission may kindly be granted for 1.5 Million Tons of GM soybean meal, which will control the current and future crisis until the new crop arrival in the month of October. After paying the duty, the landed price of soybean meal would be Rs.62,500 per MT, which will not adversely affect Indian soya farmers, as soya seed prices would still remain above the MSP declared by the Government of India for soya seed. This will not only help stabilize the current soybean meal prices, which will benefit the livestock feed industry, but also earn a healthy revenue of ₹450 crores for the Government of India. Alongside, it will help farmers get better realization of their crops by getting 25–30% more than the declared Government MSP on soya seed.

Such calibrated and temporary measures will help stabilise feed input markets, protect lakhs of poultry farmers, moderate egg and chicken prices for consumers, and safeguard livelihoods across rural India. We are confident that your positive intervention will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the interests of poultry, aquaculture and livestock farmers across the country.

The industry has still five months to operate before the new crop supplies come in, an immediate intervention of GM soybean meal imports will give much needed respite to the poultry industry and will have a balancing act between supply and demand. If left unaddressed, the situation may trigger a contraction in poultry production, with effects on food inflation and the rural economy. Given the current circumstances, taking the following steps appears imperative to ensure the continuity of the industry and to safeguard the interests of consumers and to ensure an uninterrupted supply of protein-rich feed,

The Industry Associations are hopeful that Hon’ble Minister shall give urgent consideration and take early action in the larger national interest of ensuring protein affordability, food security and stability in the poultry sector.

10.2 Infrastructure & Institutional Bottlenecks

Despite growth in processing and cold-chain capacity, much of India’s poultry still operates in fragmented, small-scale settings. Export-ready, large-scale processing infrastructure remains limited; regulatory compliance, traceability, hygiene standards, packaging — all need strengthening.
Inequities in infrastructure across states can lead to regional disparities, inefficiencies, and quality variations — which may hurt long-term competitiveness.

10.3 Disease Risk, Biosecurity, and Animal Welfare

Large-scale poultry farming increases the risk of disease outbreaks (e.g., avian influenza), which can have severe economic and public health impacts. Maintaining biosecurity, veterinary care, regular health monitoring, and outbreak preparedness is essential but challenging — especially in regions with limited veterinary infrastructure or poor compliance.

Additionally, large-scale industrial poultry farming may raise concerns about animal welfare, environmental impacts, waste management, and antibiotic use — all of which could invite public scrutiny and regulatory pressures.

10.4 Domestic Consumption Patterns & Cultural/ Dietary Constraints
Despite rising demand, per-capita consumption of eggs and poultry meat remains well below global averages. Cultural, religious, economic constraints, and dietary preferences (e.g., vegetarianism) in large segments of Indian population limit poultry consumption.
Moreover, price-sensitive consumers might substitute to cheaper proteins or plant-based diets if poultry prices rise, or if supply becomes unstable — reducing demand stability.

10.5 Export Competitiveness & Global Competition

India faces stiff competition from major poultry exporting countries (e.g., USA, Brazil, EU nations) with established supply chains, lower feed costs, advanced processing facilities, and established brand/trade relationships. Given the feed-cost disadvantage, infrastructural constraints, and regulatory complexities (sanitary standards, trade barriers) — competing in global markets at scale may be challenging. Therefore, India’s success internationally would depend not just on production volume, but on quality, value addition, logistics, compliance, cost management, and strategic trade policy.

11. Case Study / Illustrative Example: State-wise Dynamics & Regional Patterns
While nationwide data reflects aggregate success, the poultry boom in India is unevenly distributed, with certain states contributing disproportionately.
As per APEDA and recent government reports, the leading egg-producing states (2022–23) are Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, and Karnataka — together contributing around 65% of the national egg output.
This concentration reflects a combination of favourable climate, established commercial poultry enterprises, better infrastructure (hatcheries, feed mills, processing plants), transport connectivity, and market access — particularly in southern and eastern India.
In contrast, many northern and central states remain under-represented in poultry output, due to factors such as climate (cold, variation in temperature), lesser infrastructure, underdevelopment of feed and processing industries, lower investments, and limited integration into commercial value-chains.
This uneven distribution has important implications: for achieving equitable growth, food-security across regions, and maximizing national potential, efforts are needed to expand poultry infrastructure and capacities beyond existing hubs — into under-served states and rural areas.

Given the structural dynamics, market trends, and socio-economic context, the future of Indian poultry looks promising — provided certain strategic and policy measures are adopted. Below are key recommendations and outlook:
1. Promote Feed-Security & Cost Efficiency
– Invest in domestic maize/soybean production to ensure stable input supply.
– Research and promote alternative, cost-effective feed sources (e.g., agricultural by-products, insect-based proteins, sustainable feed substitutes).

I have been working in the region for more than 20 years, always in the field of animal nutrition and feed additives. Over the years I have worked closely with integrators, feed mills and farmers across Asia. My main interest is how innovative, sustainable nutrition concepts can support both healthy animals and healthy profits.

Ricky Thaper: How do you see your connection to the Indian poultry sector in particular?
Dr. Andreas Lewke: India is a key part of our Asian focus. The scale, professionalism and speed of development in the Indian poultry industry are impressive. Over the years I have had many discussions with Indian colleagues at conferences and during customer visits in the region.

What I see is a very strong base of local expertise and entrepreneurial spirit. Indian poultry professionals are highly knowledgeable and very open to new ideas, but they rightly expect clear evidence and practical benefits. They ask tough, practical questions: does it work in my conditions, is it economic, does it help me secure my business in the long run? This mindset fits very well with how we work at Dr. Eckel.

Ricky Thaper: From your perspective, how would you describe the Indian poultry industry today – its strengths and its main challenges?
Dr. Andreas Lewke: India is already one of the largest poultry producers in the world and still has significant growth potential. Rising incomes, urbanisation and changing food habits are driving demand for affordable, high-quality animal protein. Poultry is often the first choice because it is accessible, versatile and fits well with consumer preferences.

At the same time, the industry needs to manage several challenges. Feed raw materials can be expensive and volatile, so producers need to get the maximum value from every ration. Disease pressure and biosecurity are constant topics, especially in high-density production areas.
There is also a clear move towards reducing antibiotic use and towards more sustainable, welfare-orientated production systems that make better use of resources. For us, this combination of strong market growth and pressure on costs and resources makes India not only one of the most important poultry markets globally but also one of the most inspiring to work with.

Ricky Thaper: In this context, how do you see Dr. Eckel contributing to Indian poultry in the coming years?

Mycoplasma Synoviae: A Silent Profit Killer in Poultry https://www.vprintinfotech.com/mycoplasma-synoviae-a-silent-profit-killer-in-poultry/ Sat, 20 Dec 2025 06:48:11 +0000 https://www.vprintinfotech.com/?p=7402 Mycoplasma synoviae occurs worldwide and is one of the two most consequential avian mycoplasmas alongside Mycoplasma gallinarum, with recognized roles in variety of illnesses which includes infectious synovitis with joint and tendon-sheath exudation, upper-respiratory infections and a unique laying-hen syndrome marked by decreased production and degrading shell integrity of the eggs known as Eggshell Apex Abnormalities (EAA). Transmission of Mycoplasma synoviae occurs both vertically via eggs and horizontally through close contact, with disease expression exacerbated by co-infections (IBV, NDV and E. coli) and environmental stressors which increases respiratory and systemic involvement. MS is a major global poultry pathogen as it shows an 11% drop in daily egg production with EAA affecting up to 24.5% of eggs in controlled trial infection, underscoring direct productivity and quality losses (Kursa et al., 2019). From year 2017 to 2021 a PCR study was conducted in India which showed that Mycoplasma synoviae positivity was around 23.61% (compared to Mycoplasma gallinarum 6.43%) with 15.49% co-infection (Giram et al., 2022). This suggests that Mycoplasma synoviae is the most common mycoplasma burden in Indian breeder and layer systems and a persistent economic hazard.

MS-associated EAA has a direct influence on income and biosecurity expenses because it increases cracked and degraded eggs, increases labour costs for sorting and cleanup and decreases hatchability through higher embryonic mortality when shell integrity is compromised. EAA manifests as irregularities at the egg’s apex, including thinning, increased translucency and susceptibility to cracks. These defects lead to increased egg breakage and spoilage, directly leading to degrading egg quality and marketability.

Etiology and Transmission:
Mycoplasma synoviae, belongs to the Mycoplasmataceae family and is fastidious about its culture conditions as it requires serum and NAD on modified Frey media. The pathogenicity of strains varies due to immune evasion, adhesins, sialidase activity, nitric oxide generation and antigenic diversity.

The host range of the MS infection includes chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, pheasants, quail and psittacines. Transmission occurs via both vertical and horizontal route. Vertical transmission takes place through transovarian infection, leading to early chick exposure, while horizontal transmission occurs via aerosol spread, respiratory secretions, fomites and human activity. Once introduced, the infection tends to persist, as infected flocks become lifelong carriers. Multi-age layer systems further support its persistence and contribute to episodic clinical outbreaks.

Pathogenesis:
M. synoviae primarily enters the host through the respiratory tract, with the upper respiratory mucosa serving as the initial site of colonization. With the help of specialized surface proteins and adhesions the organism attaches to the epithelial cells which help it to evade mucociliary clearance. From the respiratory tract, it can spread locally, causing tracheitis, airsacculitis and respiratory distress. In some birds, the pathogen disseminates via bacteraemia, reaching synovial membranes and joints, where it induces inflammation. This leads to synovitis, characterized by swelling, pain and lameness, often accompanied by exudation of yellowish synovial fluid. The organism may also localize in the tendon sheaths and bursae, producing tenosynovitis. Co-infections with other respiratory pathogens (e.g., E. coli, NDV and IBV) exacerbate disease severity. Chronic infections are common and affected birds may become carriers, serving as reservoirs for flock-to-flock transmission.

Clinical Signs:
Mycoplasma synoviae most commonly causes subclinical upper respiratory infections or infectious synovitis and tenosynovitis, while in layers it is also associated with eggshell apex abnormality (EAA) syndrome, characterized by thin, rough, translucent shell apices and intermittent production loss (Feberwee et al., 2009). The clinical expression of the disease is often expressed by stress and co-infections with pathogens such as infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and Escherichia coli (Lockaby et al., 1998).

Affected birds may show mild respiratory involvement, including slight tracheal rales and sinusitis which are more evident under poor air quality or concurrent respiratory infections. The musculoskeletal form is marked by lameness, reluctance to walk, swelling of the hock joint, wing joints and footpads with exudative tenosynovitis of tendon sheaths and sternal bursitis. In systemic or severe cases, signs include depression, inappetence, ruffled feathers, weight loss and pale to cyanotic head parts, with occasional vasculitis and keel bursitis. Morbidity typically ranges from low to moderate, while mortality is generally low but may increase in the presence of secondary bacterial infections, wet litter, cold stress and immunosuppression.

Post Mortem Lesions:
– Respiratory tract:
– Mild to moderate airsacculitis with thickening, opacity and presence of turbid or caseous exudate.
– Mucoid tracheitis and sinusitis (especially when complicated by co-infections).
– Joints and musculoskeletal system:
– Synovitis: Swollen joints (particularly hock, wing and foot joints) with accumulation of yellow to serofibrinous exudate.
– Tenosynovitis: Inflamed tendon sheaths filled with exudate.
– Sternal bursitis (breast blisters) with fibrinous to caseous material.
– Systemic involvement:
– Generalized fibrinous polyserositis in some cases, especially with secondary E. coli infection.
– Emaciation and poor body condition due to chronic disease.
– Eggshell apex abnormality (in layers):
No specific gross lesion in reproductive tract, but post-mortem examination may reveal rough, thin and translucent apices of eggshells in affected flocks.

– Diagnosis:

Diagnosis of MS relies on combination of clinical observation, serology, microbiology and molecular techniques. Observation of respiratory signs such as sneezing, coughing and nasal discharge, along with joint or tendon swelling indicative of synovitis or tenosynovitis and specially in layers, eggshell apex abnormalities like thin, rough or translucent apexes can be observed.
However, clinical signs alone are not definitive, as they can overlap with other infections like NDV, IBV or E. coli.

Serological tests, including ELISA, rapid plate agglutination (RPA) and hemagglutination inhibition (HI), are useful for flock-level monitoring, though maternal antibodies and past exposure can complicate interpretation. Microbiological isolation from choanal or tracheal swabs and synovial fluid using specialized media allows definitive identification of MS, but the process is slow and prone to contamination. Molecular methods such as PCR and real-time PCR offer rapid, sensitive and specific detection of MS DNA, even at low bacterial loads. For accurate diagnosis, a combination of clinical assessment, serology and molecular confirmation is recommended, especially in flocks showing respiratory disease, joint swelling, or eggshell defects.

Treatment
Along with careful use of antibiotics, proper management practices and vaccination strategies are very important in Mycoplasma synoviae management. Treatment typically relies on antimicrobials such as tylosin, tiamulin, doxycycline or enrofloxacin, which can reduce bacterial load and clinical signs, but complete eradication is difficult due to intracellular persistence. Widespread and indiscriminate antibiotic use has led to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in MS strains because of these challenges, thus, vaccination plays a central role in flock protection, lower bacterial shedding and prevent eggshell apex abnormalities in layers.

Prevention and Control:
Prevention focuses on biosecurity measures, including sourcing MS-free breeders, controlling movement of personnel and equipment and minimizing stressors that predispose birds to infection. Integrated control combining vaccination, strict biosecurity, monitoring via serology or PCR and responsible antimicrobial use is essential to minimize economic losses, maintain flock health and reduce the risk of AMR development. Thus vaccination, combined with good biosecurity and management practices can control MS spread, minimizing antibiotic reliance and maintaining flock productivity.

Abstract
Feed constitutes the largest single cost component in commercial poultry production, typically accounting for 60–75% of total production cost. In India, volatility in feed costs and irregular availability of key raw materials (maize, soybean/soybean meal, rapeseed meal, fishmeal, and others) have created recurring pressures on producer margins, market stability and food security. This article examines the drivers of feed cost volatility in the Indian poultry sector, assesses patterns of raw material availability, and evaluates short- and medium-term strategies used by industry and policymakers to manage risk. We synthesise recent market evidence (2023–2025), identify structural vulnerabilities—such as dependence on a narrow set of feed ingredients, fragmented procurement, and policy mismatches—and review practical mitigation strategies including alternative feed ingredients, feed formulation optimisation, vertical integration, risk-sharing contracts, and public policy interventions (market intelligence, buffer stocks, and targeted support). The article concludes with recommendations for research priorities and policy measures to improve resilience of the poultry value chain to feed cost and supply shocks.
