It was an honour to interact with Ms. Kim Reynolds, honourable Governor of Iowa State, USA. Governor Kim Reynolds is the 43rd governor of Iowa State and has the distinction of being the first woman elected to the office. During the round table meeting, I had good interaction with Mr. Mike Naig, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Gary Wynne, Agriculture and Energy Policy Advisor, Office of the Governor, State of Iowa and other delegation members from Iowa, USA.

Mr. Kevin Roepke, Regional Director, South Asia and Su Sahara Africa (SASSA), U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) welcomed all delegates and introduced the Governed and other delegation members from Iowa.


This was followed by keynote address by Governor Kim Reynolds on Iowa-Freedom to Flourish. Mr. Mike Naig spoke on Iowa-India Ag cooperation. Mr. Nicole Podesta, Senior Agricultural Attaché, US Consulate, Mumbai spoke on USA-India Ag Cooperation. Mr. Randy Miller, USSEC Director gave nice presentation on Iowa Farming Technology Implementation. Mr. Sumit Gupta, CEO, WASEDA, gave an impressive presentation on India S&D imbalance.


Other speakers at the meeting were Mr. Divya Kumar Gulati, Chairman, CLFMA, Mr. Ricky Thaper, Mr. Sunil Kataria, CEO & MD, Godrej Agrovet Limited, Mr. Joe Dierickx, USSEC Director, Iowa Farm Bureau, Mr. Joe Robert’s, Director, Iowa Corn Promotion Board and Mr. Tom Adam, President, Iowa Soybean Association.
The Roundtable dialogue focused on advancing collaboration between Iowa and India in agriculture, agri science, renewable energy and allied sectors, building a stronger bridge for trade, technology and investment.


Mr. Franklin, Country Team Lead-India, USSEC gave closing remark. This was followed by the Networking Reception, attended by all invites, fostering new partnerships and collaborative opportunities.


It was nice to represent the poultry industry in such a strategic forum and contribute to advancing sustainable practices, innovative solutions, and strengthening the soy and poultry value chains in India. If we negate the effect of tariff, there are very good chances of import of US Soybean Meal by Indian Poultry Industry. The insights and learnings from this event will help drive positive impact and foster greater collaboration within the industry.

INFAH National Seminar 2025-Focuses on Strengthening Animal Health through Public-Private Partnerships

The Indian Federation of Animal Health Companies (INFAH) hosted its National Seminar 2025 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, under the theme “Strengthening Animal Health and its Economics through Public-Private Partnership for Viksit Bharat” on March 20, 2025.

In the day-long event, over 100 delegates, including scientists, academicians, policymakers, regulators, and industry leaders, participated to deliberate on advancing veterinary health through Public Private Partnerships.

INAUGURAL SESSION
– Dr. Anup Kalra, Joint Secretary, INFAH, opened the session by highlighting the evolution of INFAH as a pivotal bridge between government, academia, and industry, and emphasized that collaborative models are crucial to realizing India’s Viksit Bharat goals.

– Dr. Shirish Nigam, President, INFAH, delivered the welcome address, reiterating that while business can drive progress 364 days a year, one day must be dedicated to industry introspection and united advocacy. He outlined INFAH’s commitment to policy reforms and presented key demands to the Ministry for regulatory clarity, faster product approvals, and technology enablement. He also acknowledged the support from current management committee comprising of Dr. Aman Syed (Vice President), Dr. Anup Kalra (Joint Secretary), Dr. Manoj Sood (Treasurer) as well as Executive members Dr. Vijay Makhija, Mr. Vijay Teng, Mr. Satish Pasrija, Dr. Arun Atrey, Mr. Gautam Chatterjee, Ms. Ashwini Deshpande, Dr. Vinayak Surve & Mr. Sushanta Dey.

KEYNOTE ADDRESSES
– Prof. Dr. S. P. Singh Baghel, Hon’ble Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, served as the Chief Guest. He expressed his admiration for INFAH’s proactive role and emphasized that while laboratories are critical, outcomes must reach quickly, and that farmers and animals truly benefit. He called PPP models the “most successful approach” for rural transformation. Hon’ble minister also mentioned that animal husbandry is not a parallel economy; it should be considered a primary sector. The government aims to double farmers’ income, and livestock farming is crucial in achieving this goal.
– Ms. Alka Upadhyaya, IAS, Secretary, DAHD, delivered the Thematic Address, emphasizing a One Health approach and public-private convergence to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), zoonotic threats, and animal welfare challenges. She shared how India is now 100% self-reliant in vaccine production for livestock sector. She even demonstrated recent studies which highlight the importance of deworming before vaccination to improve animal health.
She also highlighted the issue of mastitis and called for a nationwide program to address mastitis awareness and prevention. Madam Secretary acknowledged the critical role INFAH plays in shaping policies for the livestock sector and called for increased engagement between policymakers and industry stakeholders before formulating regulations.

 


– Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, highlighted the issue of Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) and shared how INFAH is helping by providing the data on the sale of Antimicrobials in animal health. He also reiterated the importance of government, industry, and research institutions working together to achieve self-reliance in veterinary medicine and improve animal health standards.

– Shri Abhay Mahajan, KVK, DRI, Chitrakoot, emphasized holistic rural development through ethnoveterinary practices, traditional knowledge, and youth empowerment. He mentioned the aim should be to expand the Chitrakoot model beyond MP & UP to other regions of the country.

– Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta,
DDG (Animal Science), ICAR emphasized on the livestock sector’s contribution to the economy and India’s goal to be PPR and rabies-free by 2030. He encouraged the industry to align with global export standards and leverage the growing market for preventive animal health solutions. He encouraged all participants to shift mindset from “PPP” to “Partnership for Prosperity”.

– Dr. Gauri Shankar, Deputy Drugs Controller, CDSCO, shared CDSCO’s progress with digital platforms like Sugam and underscored the need for mutual trust and accountability in regulatory pathways to foster innovation.

– Dr. Hirofumi Kugita, Representative for Asia-Pacific, World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), through his message highlighted international collaboration for disease surveillance and control. He emphasized aligning India’s veterinary health standards with global guidelines to improve trade access and animal welfare outcomes.

– Dr. Mohan ji Saxena, shared his wisdom and thoughts on health & ayurveda. He highlighted how our economy is going to be affected due to animal health. He appealed everyone to think of not just being healthy but Health Index. He also encouraged for scientific validation of Ayurveda for mainstream application in animal care and emphasized the importance of hygiene, immunity and nutrition in animal care.

Session 5: Topic of “Navigating the Intellectual Property & Trade Regime”
– Dr. Manisha Shridhar, Regional Advisor (WHO SEARO), delivered a compelling address tracing the history of IP—from the Paris and Berne Conventions to TRIPS. She emphasized India’s opportunity to lead global innovation by bridging traditional knowledge with patent systems, and the value of technology transfer via models like the Bayh-Dole.

Way Forward
A comprehensive report compiling all session discussions and outcomes will be submitted to the Hon’ble Minister and DAHD. This will serve as a roadmap for targeted policy actions and collaborative innovations in animal health.

Patna, April 23, 2025 — The Compound Livestock Feed Manufacturers Association (CLFMA) of India, in Collaboration with the U.S. Grains Council and with support from the Bihar Poultry Farmers Association (BPFA) successfully hosted a seminar at Patna. The seminar, themed “Poultry in India: Current Challenges & the Way Forward,” brought together more than 60 participants, including feed manufacturers, poultry farmers, nutritionists, grain suppliers, and researchers from across the region.

The seminar opened with a welcome address by Ms. Nayantara A Pande, Marketing Specialist, U.S. Grains Council, followed by a keynote on “Poultry in India and The Potential” by Mr. Divya Kumar Gulati, Chairman, CLFMA of India. He highlighted the urgent need for collective action to address rising feed costs and market volatility, stressing that strategic collaborations will be pivotal in driving sectoral resilience.

Mr. Divya Kumar Gulati, Chairman, CLFMA of India, shared, “The Indian poultry industry is at a critical crossroads, where timely interventions and strategic collaborations are essential to overcoming the challenges posed by rising feed costs, supply chain disruptions, and market volatility. According to a recent Crisil Ratings report, the industry’s profitability is expected to dip by 50 basis points in the 2025-26 fiscal year, largely due to the rising prices of key feed ingredients like maize and soybean, which account for 90% of total feed costs. However, revenue growth is still projected to rise by 8-10%, driven by strong demand and consumption. Events like these provide an invaluable platform for exchanging insights, fostering collaboration, and exploring sustainable solutions that will not only benefit our sector but also contribute to the nation’s economic resilience.” The seminar was anchored by engaging sessions led by leading voices from the Indian poultry and feed sectors.

A panel discussion on “Navigating the Indian Poultry Sector’s New Normal” was moderated by Mr. Amit Saraogi (MD, Anmol Feeds), and featured an esteemed panel including Mr. Divya Kumar Gulati, Mr. Pawan Kumar, Mr. B. In 2024, the “Year of Elections,” global leadership shifts are shaping new directions in trade and policy. CrushCon organised by U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) at Hotel Sofitel Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, embody this year’s theme, “Electing to Trade.” The conference was attended by more than 100 delegates from South Asia; India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka besides USSEC Team from Dubai and Senior Soybean Association Board Members from USA, brings into focus the connections between politics, trade and globalisation, particularly within supply chains, economic frameworks, and supply-demand factors.


The first day session opened with welcoming remarks from Mr. Kevin Roepke, Regional Director – South Asia & Sub-Saharan Africa (SAASSA), US Soybean Export Council, who introduced the key themes for conference that included

Ms. Valerie Brown, Regional Agricultural Counselor at USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), who discussed market development in the GCC, emphasizing the collaborative efforts between USSEC and USDA. Mr. Kevin Roepke said “Food inflation squeezes the middle class and erodes disposable income. The easiest way to reduce food inflation and thus improve the standards of the middle class is to lean into trade. Through trade, we can make healthier food more affordable and available to the middle class of South Asia.”


Mr. Jim Sutter, the dynamic CEO of USSEC, shared insights into the soy industry’s growth and USSEC’s commitment to sustainable solutions in nutrition. emphasized how trade is an integral channel to provide food and nutrition security, Mr. Sutter highlighting its key benefit of moving goods from point of surplus to point of deficit.
While trade helps maximize income in producing countries it provides consuming countries with availability of competitively priced products. He discussed the power of comparative advantage citing the example of Costa Rica. While Costa Rica specializes in producing bananas and coffee, the U.S. specializes in soybeans and corn. Through trade, these countries mutually benefit from high quality and competitively priced products.

Mr. Lance Rezac, USSEC Chair, provided a perspective on how U.S. farmers are meeting the demand for food while remaining environmentally responsible. USSEC members represent the soy supply chain including U.S. Soy farmers, processors, commodity shippers, merchandisers, allied agribusinesses, and agricultural organizations. USSEC is funded by the U.S. soybean checkoff, USDA Foreign Agricultural Service matching funds, and industry.

In a session on “US Soy Policy Needs Post-Election,” Daryl Cates, Chairman, American Soybean Association (ASA), highlighted the priorities for U.S. soy in Congress’s lame duck session. He emphasized the value of Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) funding and the potential impact of future free trade agreements (FTAs) on U.S. soybean exports.


The keynote presentation was by Mr. James Fry, Glenauk Economis. A standout keynote fireside chat, “Electing to Trade,” featured former USDA Secretary Dan Glickman in conversation with Kevin Roepke, exploring how trade policies could evolve following global elections. The first day morning session concluded with the panel “Pakistan Two Years On,” sponsored by the South Dakota Soybean Checkoff, where Zain Mahmood and Shahzad Ali Khan shared advancements and partnerships in Pakistan’s agricultural sector. CRUSHCON Dubai and HUNGERCON Dubai continue to bring insightful dialogues, networking, and fresh perspectives toward a sustainable future.

The afternoon sessions of CRUSHCON Dubai continued to delve into the intricacies of global trade and its implications, with a focus on geopolitics, market dynamics, and sustainability. The keynote address on Geopolitical Economics featured Ms. Trinh Nguyen, Senior Economist for Emerging Asia at Natixis, who provided insights into the evolving landscape of emerging markets, particularly in Asia. Her perspectives, widely respected across international news platforms, are invaluable for understanding the region’s economic pulse. In the session titled Global Oilseeds Spotlight, David Mielke, Director at Oil World in Germany, addressed the relationship between low corn and soybean prices and their potential to drive a global boom in the livestock and poultry sectors. His analysis brought forward important discussions on supply and demand dynamics in the industry.

Mr. Jaison John, Regional Head of Market Intelligence- South Asia, USSEC spoke on “How Policies Have Distorted Regional Prices for Feed Ingredients” and shed light on the complexities of trade policies that have affected feed ingredient pricing, making previously affordable sources of animal protein some of the most expensive globally. The Freight Sector Spotlight, presented by Mr. Voytek Chelkowski from Seamind Blue Ocean, highlighted the impact of freight volatility on margins. He emphasized the importance of understanding FOB versus C&F purchase decisions within the current geopolitical climate.



A significant moment came with the SUSS Logo Signing, where Nepal joined the initiative for sustainability, welcoming five companies into the fold, including Valley Group (NP), Kosmo Feed Mills (SL), Adamjee Lukmanjee (SL) and Nel Farms (SL),. Presenting this initiative were Ms. Deeba Giannoulis, Dr. Pawan Kumar and Dr. Athula Mahagamage.

 

The afternoon concluded with a keynote address on US Soy’s Commitment to Global Nutrition Security, showcasing the dedication of senior USSEC leadership to enhancing global nutrition.

Recognizing Pioneers Making an Impact in South Asia’s Protein Value Chain Each year, through its HungerCon event powered by Right to Protein, USSEC recognizes and celebrates outstanding contributors to the protein value space in South Asia.

Ms. Deeba Giannoulis, Regional Head of Corporate Affairs-SAASSA, reflected on the origins of HungerCON and the legacy of past winners who have paved the way for advancing the discourse on nutritional security. This year’s esteemed ‘HungerCon Award’ was awarded to Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in India for her pioneering work in integrating science into health policymaking. Other notable nominations included Mr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan, Vice Chancellor, University of Agriculture in Faisalabad, Pakistan and Mrs. Vibha Ahuja, Chief General Manager, Biotech Consortium India Limited from India.

The second day of CRUSHCON Dubai 2024 brought forward insightful discussions and innovative solutions aimed at advancing sustainability and global nutrition. Ms. Christelle Cordahi, Regional Human Utilization & Nutrition Consultant at USSEC, presented on the importance of incorporating diverse protein sources, both animal and plant-based, to support a balanced diet. Her insights underscored the essential role of soy in overall health.

Ms. Tori Sorensen, Chair of the SEC Global Advisory Panel, shared the impressive growth and influence of the Soy Excellence Center (SEC) worldwide, which have significantly contributed to knowledge sharing and training in the soy sector. By providing free, accessible and comprehensive training options, Soy Excellence Center empowers professionals to stay updated with the latest trends and innovations in their fields. Soy Excellence Center courses adds tremendous value to industry workforce engaged in the protein value chain.

Ms. Tori Sorensen, Chair of the SEC Global Advisory Panel, presented the ceremonial SEC lapel pin to Mr. Ricky Thaper, Regional Advisory Council (RAC) Member Soy Excellence Center-India.

Dr. Tom D’Alfonso, Director of Animal & Aquaculture at USSEC, highlighted the value of optimizing feed nutrient profiles, stressing that not all soy is created equal. He described how U.S. soybean meal is tailored to maximize nutritional benefits for poultry, fish, and shrimp. In an insightful session, Will McNair, Global Head of Human Utilization at USSEC, discussed the complexities of soybean oil processing. He explained how factors such as damage, maturity, and moisture levels significantly affect the quality of soy oil, emphasizing how U.S. soybeans lead in optimizing refinery operations.


The day concluded with a wrap-up by Mr. Kevin Roepke, summarizing key outcomes and insights from the sessions. He emphasized the collaborative spirit of the conference and its potential to drive positive change in the agriculture and nutrition sectors. World Veterinary Poultry Association (India) Conference 2024: A Resounding Success

A two-days international conference of World Veterinary Poultry Association (India) was organized on topic “Avian Health: Challenges and Opportunities” during 15-16 February 2024 at ICAR-NIANP, Bengaluru in association with World Veterinary Poultry Association (India). The formal inauguration of the conference was carried out on 15th February by the Chief Guest Padam Vibhushan Hon’ble Former Vice President of India Shri M Venkaiah Naidu and Guest of Honour was Dr J. Radhakrishnan, Additional Chief Secretary & Commissioner, Greater Chennai, Dr Raghavendra Bhatta, DDG (AS), ICAR, New Delhi and Prof. Sjaak De Wit, President, WVPA (Global) and Dr Jeetendra Verma, President, WVPA (India).

Hon’ble Chief Guest M Venkaiah Naidu emphasized on the shared commitment to excellence and collaboration towards the betterment of global poultry health. He said by working together, we can build a resilient and sustainable future for the poultry birds, poultry farmers, poultry industry and also ensuring a safe and abundant food supply for generations to come. The conference was attended by more than 250 national and international delegates across the academia, research institutions, industry personnel and progressive poultry farmers.

During these two days the discussion was carried out on various burning topics like Poultry Disease and Management, Poultry Genetics and Breeding, Poultry Products technology and Marketing. Total 18 lead speakers in 5 different technical sessions from India and Abroad (Netherland, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, Bangladesh, and Pakistan) presented their research papers in the conference among them Prof Sjaak de Wit & Dr Guanlin Wang from Netherland, Prof Pavel Horky from Czech Republic, Dr. Myeong Seob Kim from Spain; Dr Marisabel Caballero from Germany, Dr Md. Rafiqul Islam from Bangladesh and Dr Muhammad Kashif Saleemi from Pakistan (online mode) were the main attraction. A new programme “student elocution” on recent advances in the field of poultry science was also initiated during the conference. More than 25 students shared their views on different assigned topics. Technical poster presentation sessions were also conducted in which more than 100 research abstracts were presented by researchers and post graduate students came across India.

The exuberant and enthralling cultural programme was also staged on the night of gala dinner. The cultural program was appreciated by all the delegates. All the eminent personalities of poultry industry, supporting associations, press and media were recognized and felicitated.

After conducting the technical session, the closing ceremony was graced by Dr. O.P. Chaudhary, Joint Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India as Chief Guest and Dr. Habibur Rehman, Former DDG (AS), ICAR, New Delhi & Regional Representative, South Asia, ILRI, New Delhi as Guest of Honour with other dignitaries on the dais and off the dais. Dr O.P. Choudhary narrated the different initiatives undertaken by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt of India to propel the poultry sector forward. He stressed on the power of innovation, collaboration, and sustainability to build a more resilient, equitable, and prosperous poultry sector that will nourish people, support livelihoods, and protect the planet.

During the valedictory function the organizing secretary of previous WVPA (India) conference Dr Girraj Goyal, NDVSU was felicitated for successfully organizing the conference last year in 2023 at Jabalpur. The prizes were distributed to 12 research scholars who got first, second and third in research paper presentations and student elocution programme by the chief guests. Mr. Clay M. Hamilton, Minister Counsellor for Agricultural Affairs, US Department of Agriculture, US Embassy, delivered impactful opening remarks. Dr. Seth Meyer, Chief Economist, US Department of Agriculture, presented insightful perspectives on opportunities and challenges in the Global Agricultural Space. Mr. Suresh Chitturi delivered a compelling presentation on the State of the Indian Livestock Sector, and Dr. Vijay Singh, Professor from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA, shared valuable insights on India-US collaboration in Industrial Starch Processing.


The highlight of the summit was the panel discussion, titled “Win-Win Agriculture: Aspirations for Future Collaboration,” featuring prominent figures such as Mr. Kevin Roepke, Regional Director, South Asia & Sub-Saharan Africa, USSEC; Mr. Reece Cannady, Director, U.S. Grains Council; Mr. Naveen Pasuparthy, President, KPFBA; and Mr. Ramakanth Akula, CEO, The Waterbase Limited.

The Netherlands Business Support Offices (NBSO) in collaboration with the Agriculture Department of the Netherlands Embassy in India organised a pioneering technical session themed “India and The Netherlands – Towards a Sustainable Poultry Sector.” Held at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) on November 22, 2023, the event convened esteemed experts and industry leaders to delve into the vital aspects of sustainable poultry practices.

The Show attracted good response from the elite of the Poultry industry with the galaxy of prime speakers in their respective field.The idea of Sustainability, which is a happening word around the world yet with limited and narrowed understanding of the How of it – is indeed a challenge!

The Dean, College of Veterinary Science and A.H., Veterinary University DUVASU Mathura – Prof (Dr.) Pankaj Kumar Shukla – a very popular and well-known figure in the industry – not only with in the government but excellent interaction with the active associations, federations and an excellent bridge between the government policies and the seamless benefits of the knowledge and technology to the private sector ultimately helping the farming community. Dr PK Shukla – made and exhaustive but points with a punch of how the Sustainability objectives in our poultry industry – which is more specific to it was brilliantly explained and shared.

Mr Bouke Hamminga (Director PasReforms) another seasoned traveler of India from the Netherlands threw light on how modern hatching technologies has an significant impact on the sustainable poultry production. There were new concepts that helped accelerate growth and increase profitability.

Mr Edouard Perrault, Director SASSO (Hendrix Genetics) shared his experience of how the genetic innovation and advancements were affecting the life of the rural farmer in the traditional colored bird farming in the tropical countries of Africa, Asia. This seems to have a positive impact on the Indian objective of doubling the farmers income. Easy management of the birds and solving generation of income and also addressing the nutritional requirements.

The Agricultural Counsellor of the Netherlands Embassy Mr. Michiel van Erkel is not a new face in these events over the past so many occasions at Poultry India.
The industry thanks him for offering such a beautiful platform for interaction between the Specialists, Industrialists and the government for the benefit of Poultry Industry. The moderator and the audience expressed their immense happiness and thankfulness for the efforts of Michiel in initiating such an event where his efforts to bind the countries in a useful exchange of idea and partnership for the growth of the industry. There were a good number of Dutch investors, companies and participants who always have appreciated such events.

Mr Selvan Kannan (Value Consultants) conducted the Moderation with seamless flair in ensuring interactions to bring out the best of the speakers and the august audience that were rapt in attention. All prominent media persons were present to partake the message on the latest on the sustainability!

The event concluded grandly with take home points and also gathering with dinner. Mr Rambabu from the NBSO did a good job in organizing this successfully once again as in continuation of several of them in the past.

On the 11th of September 2023, Optima Life Sciences, in collaboration with the North India Broiler Producer Association, hosted a technical seminar at Hotel Noor Mahal in Karnal. This event brought together over 70 key stakeholders from the poultry sector in the North region. The seminar proved to be a highly impactful gathering and discussions among participants in the poultry industry.
